Deaf Ability Initiative (DAI) is an indigenous, non-profit organization founded in 2006 and legally registered in 2011 as a National Non-Governmental Organization in Kenya. We partner with governments, communities, and civil society to create an inclusive and accessible world for children and young people with disabilities.

Who we are
About Deaf Ability Initiative
While we support all persons with disabilities, we place a special focus on deaf children and young deaf individuals. DAI delivers its mission through four key programs: Livelihoods, Education, Health, and Kenyan Sign Language (KSL). As a disability-led organization, we also champion evidence-based advocacy to promote the inclusion of persons with disabilities in the policies and programs that shape their lives.

Our Program
Education
We believe education is the greatest equalizer for persons with disabilities. We focus on strengthening language and communication for deaf children and their families, promoting early diagnosis, and advocating for quality inclusive learning. We also offer scholarships and support systems change in the education sector.

Sustainable Livelihoods and Climate Justice
We equip young people with disabilities with vocational, social, and entrepreneurial skills, including income-generating activities and sustainable agriculture. We partner with employers and communities to open inclusive economic opportunities, and advocate for disability-inclusive climate projects where youth with disabilities shape planning, policy, and budgeting.

Our Program
Kenyan Sign Language (KSL)
Kenyan Sign Language is central to our identity and inclusion efforts. We provide KSL training to service providers and the public and advocate for its official recognition and widespread use, helping to dismantle communication barriers for the deaf community.

Health
Health is a fundamental right. We work to ensure children and young people with disabilities have access to quality healthcare, including sexual and reproductive health services, on an equal basis with others. We also raise awareness of these rights within communities.
